When I first glanced at this question I was under the impression that Riot Grrrl was a band, however I now realize it was a movement. The Riot Grrrl movement has been known to start the third wave feminist movement. Before the third wave feminist there was a second wave. The second wave movement sought legal and institutional rights, which they were successful in getting.
The third wave focuses more on stereo-types and how woman are portrayed. Riot Grrrl started off as a place where women could express themselves with words and music to each other. After a while Riot Grrrl spread quickly through the internet focusing on feminism, race, ageism, and sexism to name a few.
When the Riot Grrrl movement began in the early 90’s I don’t think that it met the goal of the third wave feminist movement. The reason I say that is because it was women rock bands expressing problems about being a woman. I understand the point they were trying to make, but I don’t think the rock bands would get that point across the way they wanted it to. Now when Riot Grrrl expanded to the internet and broaden their cause they met the third wave feminist movement.
The Riot Grrrl movement is still expanding, thanks to the internet. With today’s issues with gender inequality I wouldn’t be surprised if it got a little boost. Women’s salaries have been noticeable lower for doing the same job as a man. Some of this has been brought to our society’s attention thanks to the SONY hack. Maybe we will see them get involved in this….
